The Colegio Maya was founded in 1958. It is a private nonprofit, nonsectarian, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from nursery through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from the second week of August to the second week of December and from the second week of January to the first week of May.

Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors elected for 2-year terms by the Colegio Maya Association. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School.

Curriculum: Colegio Maya offers a complete U.S. curriculum. Spanish is required for one class period daily for all students. Placement in Spanish classes is determined by the student's level upon enrollment. Beginning French is offered at the secondary level as an elective. All other instruction is in English. In addition, graduation requirements include art, science, math, social studies, physical education, and several electives. The program is recognized and authorized by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education, and is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Presently the special services offered by the school are for mild learning disabilities and English-as-a-Second-Language. Parents with special needs children should contact Colegio Maya for a description of the limited services available for students with mild learning disabilities. The student activities program is considered to be an integral part of the curriculum and is treated as such by the administration and staff.
