The American School of The Hague is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1953. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from late August to late January and from late January to mid-June.

Organization: The School is governed by an Executive Committee of 11 members, elected for 3-year terms by the parents of students enrolled. The School is incorporated in the United States and has been designated as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. academic, college-preparatory public schools. In addition to the Advanced Placement program, the International Baccalaureate program was introduced in school year 1995-96. The elementary and middle schools have gifted programs. Instruction is in English. French, Spanish, Dutch, and German are taught as foreign languages. There is no religious instruction. A broad program of extracurricular activities is available. The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the European Council of International Schools.

Faculty: There are 101 full-time and 29 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 95 U.S. citizens, 15 host-country nationals, and 20 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 1,020 (PK-grade 4: 360; grades 5-8: 320; and grades 9-12: 340). Of the total, 570 are U.S. citizens, 60 are host-country nationals, and 390 are third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 45 are dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 505 of U.S. business and foundation employees, and 20 of other private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: In August 1990, the School moved into a new, purpose-built facility on an 11-acre site in nearby Wassenaar. The building includes elementary, middle and high school academic units; a double gymnasium; a 360-seat theater; and specialized rooms for music, art, science (6), home economics, technology and computer (4). The computerized library houses 30,000 volumes, and the cafeteria seats 300. The site includes playgrounds, bus and car parking, a sports complex, and 2 soccer fields, with additional fields nearby for baseball and soccer.

Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 96 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $3,360; Kdg.-grade 4: $8,104; grades 5-8: $9,272; and grades 9-12: $9,808. There is an enrollment fee payable on first enrollment in the School and an annual capital fee per student. These fees are payable in Dutch guilders or U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
