2000-2001 The International School Hamburg is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1957. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from mid-August to mid-June. Organization: The School is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors, elected for 2-year terms by the Association of the International School of Hamburg e.V. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School. Curriculum: The curriculum is an Anglo-American program which prepares students for entry into U.S. colleges and universities, for the IGCSE examination, and for the International Baccalaureate. The School's testing program includes the College Board tests. Instruction is in English. German, Japanese and French are taught as foreign languages. An extensive English-as-a-Foreign-Language program is offered in both the Junior School (grades 1-5) and Middle School (grades 6-8). Special education support is provided for children with moderate learning difficulties. The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Faculty: There are 64 full-time and 14 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 10 U.S. citizens, 12 host-country nationals, and 56 third-country nationals. Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 553 (PK: 57, Kdg.-grade 5: 228; grades 6-8: 113; and grades 9-12: 155). Of the total, 91 were U.S. citizens, 168 were host-country nationals, and 294 were third-country nationals. Facilities: In September 1973, the School moved its current facility, which is entirely owned by the School. In 1999 a new building housing the Early Childhood Centre was opened, and the entire school was refurbished. The facilities include a library/media center, a computer center, 5 science laboratories, a gymnasium, specialist rooms for visual education, music and dance, and an outside all-weather sports area. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 80 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition and 20 percent from a subsidy from the City of Hamburg. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $4,520; Kdg.: $6,800; grades 1-5: $9,000; grades 6-8: $9,760; grades 9-12: $10,680. The School also charges a registration fee of $43 and a capital fee in the first year of $2,173. These fees are payable in German marks.
