The Harare International School (HIS), founded in 1992, offers an English-medium comprehensive education from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 to students of the international expatriate community in Harare. The goal of HIS is to provide an educational opportunity of such quality and breadth of scope as to facilitate the successful transition of graduates into universities and younger children into other international schools or for reentry into North American schools or their home country school system. The school year of 180 days is from August 19, 1999 to June 9, 2000.

Organization: HIS is an independent, international school administered by a 7-member Board of Trustees. Five of the members are elected and 2 are U.S. Embassy representatives.

Curriculum: The modified American international program strives to fuse the best in American and European educational practices. The achievement standards of the academic core curriculum in reading, mathematics, science, and social studies are designed to equip students with the skills and content knowledge necessary for successful transition to other international schools worldwide and for reentry into the educational systems of their home country. HIS offers Advanced Placement courses in English literature and language, European History, Comparative Governments, microeconomics, calculus, biology, French, computer studies, and studio art. Plans include expansion of the AP program and addition of International Baccalaureate courses. HIS is a candidate for accreditation with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the European Council of International Schools.

Faculty: In 1999-2000, there are 43 faculty members, including teachers from North America, Yugoslavia, France, the United Kingdom, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Australia, and New Zealand. Specialists are provided in the areas of music, physical education, French, computers, and English as a Second Language. The average teaching experience of the faculty is 10 years. All have credentials in their home country.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year was 381 students representing 48 countries including 70 U.S. citizens and 311 third-country nationals.

Facilities: The School consists of 11 buildings on 21 acres of beautiful land in Mt. Pleasant. The PK-grade 5 facility consists of 13 classrooms, a library, an art room, and a music room. The newly built middle and high schools have 19 classrooms, 4 of which are fitted as science labs, 2 of which are state-of-the-art computer labs, and a music room. The physical education facility was completed in March 1999 and houses a first-rate gymnasium, a dance studio, a weight room, and shower/changing facilities.

Finances: Annual tuition rates for the 1999-2000 school year are as follows: PK: $2,500; Kdg.-5: $8,800; grades 6-8: $10,000; and grades 9-11: $12,500. One-time registration fees are: Kdg.-grade 5: $3,500; grades 6-8: $3,500; and grades 9-11: $4,500. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
