The American International School of Kingston, founded in 1994, is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises 3 semesters extending from early September to mid-December, early January to late March and early April to the end of June.

Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors, 8 of whom are elected for 2-year terms by the Association of the American International School of Kingston and one ex-officio member (U.S. Ambassador or his/her designee). Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of the children enrolled in the school. The School is currently applying for tax-exempt status in the United States and in Jamaica.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of a U.S. college-preparatory public school. Instruction is in English. There is no religious instruction. It is expected that most graduates will go on to colleges and universities in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The School offers special education services for children with moderate learning disabilities, reading problems, and English-as-a-Second-Language. The School has a specially trained remedial teacher on staff.

Faculty: There are 11 full-time and 9 specialist teachers in the 2000-2001 school year, including 4 U.S. citizens, 8 host country nationals and 8 of other nationalities..

Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 122 (PK to grade 5: 72; grades 6-12: 50). Of the total, 40 were U.S. citizens, 15 were host country nationals, and 67 were children from other countries.

Facilities: The School has 9 classrooms (5 new including a science lab), a library, a music room, an art room, and an administrative office. On the grounds are 2 tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, a swimming pool, and a large playground area. The School is located 5 minutes from the center of New Kingston.

Finances: In the 2000-2001school year, almost all income derives from regular tuition. Annual tuition rates are: PK: $3,500; Kdg.-grade 5: $6,700; grades 6-8: $7,600; and grades 9-12: $7,700. New students pay a one-time non-refundable registration fee according to the following schedule: first child of family: $1,500; second child of family: $1,250; and third child of family: $1,000. All fees are payable in U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
