The Karachi American School is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from nursery through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1952. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 9 to December 22 and from January 11 to May 30. Due to space limitations, prospective students are requested to apply for admission well in advance of their arrival in Karachi.

Organization: The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors, elected for 1-year terms by the Karachi American Society, the sponsor of the School. Membership in the Society is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School. The Society is registered under the Societies Registration Act of Pakistan. The School is not incorporated in the United States but is tax-exempt in the United States.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. academic, college-preparatory public or private schools. Advanced Placement courses are offered in 9 subjects. The School has only limited ability to accommodate students having exceptional educational needs. The School's testing program includes the ITBS, PSAT/NMSQT, AP, SAT I, and SAT II. Instruction is in English. French, Spanish, and Urdu are taught as foreign languages. English-as-a-Second-Language is offered for nonnative speakers of English through grade 9. There are chapters of the National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society. There is no religious instruction. Most of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Faculty: There are 42 full-time and 4 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 27 U.S. citizens, 9 host-country nationals and 10 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 338 (PN-grade 5: 128; grades 6-8: 81; and grades 9-12: 129). Of the total, 81 were U.S. citizens, 166 host-country nationals, and 91 third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 2 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 79 were dependents of private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: The School is housed in a modern plant on approximately 10 acres of land. It is well equipped with elementary and secondary school libraries, science and language laboratories, 2 computer laboratories, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and an athletic field.

Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 90 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PN: $3,000; N: $5,775; Kdg.: $8,652; grades 1-5: $8,672; grades 6-11: $8,682; and grade 12; $8,772. First-year students are charged an additional $3,000 registration fee on a one-time basis. There is also an application fee of $41 per student. These fees are payable in Pakistani rupees by Pakistani citizens or U.S. dollars by others. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
