Dr. William Mules, Head of School 2000-2001 The American School in London is an independent, non-profit, coeducational day school enrolling students in prekindergarten through grade 12. The School has a rolling admissions policy and can accept students anytime during the school year provided they meet the admissions criteria and places are available. The School was founded in 1951. The school year comprises 3 trimesters, beginning in September and ending in June. Organization: The School is organized in 3 school divisions: the Lower School, the Middle School, and the High School. Each division has its own administration and faculty. The School is owned by the American School in London Educational Trust and is governed by a Board of Trustees. It is registered as a charity in the United Kingdom and as a non-profit corporation in the United States. Curriculum: The High School follows a U.S. college-preparatory program including a wide range of Advanced Placement classes. The Middle School has team teaching and integrated study for core courses and also offers a large number of electives. In the Lower School, individual and group work is used to enhance problem-solving, critical thinking, and logic skills. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the European Council of International Schools. Faculty: There were 150 faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 109 U.S. citizens, 24 host-country nationals, and 17 third-country nationals. Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 1,276 (PK-grade 12). Of the total, 1,021 were U.S. citizens, 58 were host-country nationals, and 197 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 73 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employee, 640 of U.S. business and foundation employees and 308 of other private U.S. citizens. Facilities: The School is located on a 3.2 acre site in a residential area of Central London. The School's playing fields comprise 21 acres at Canons Park, which is 10 miles from the School. The school building (1971) is of modular design and houses 80 classrooms, 9 science and 7 computer laboratories, 5 music rooms, 5 art studios, theaters, a gymnasium complex, woodworking and ceramic studios, and 2 libraries. A renovation project started in July 1999 and is due to be completed in September 2001. It will add 24,000 sq. feet, comprising of classroom space and an additional gym and will upgrade ventilation and lighting for the entire School. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 90 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK-grade 3: $17,182; grades 4-5: $17,502; grades 6-8: $19,525; and grades 9-12: $20,022. These fees are payable in British pounds (US $.142 = 1 pound).
