The American School Foundation is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from Early Childhood Education through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. It was founded in 1888. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending approximately from August 18 to January 21 and January 24 to June 30.

Organization: The School is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors elected for 3-year terms by the American School Foundation, the sponsor of the school. Membership in the Foundation is open to U.S. citizens living in Mexico. A nominal membership fee is charged. The School is incorporated in Mexico. It has been designated as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and has tax-exempt status under Mexican law.

Curriculum: The curriculum offers a U.S. college-preparatory program as well as requirements for Mexican university admission. Instruction is in English and Spanish. The School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. There is no religious instruction. A large percentage of graduates attend colleges and universities in the United States.

Faculty: There are 236 full-time and 18 part-time faculty members in the 1999-2000 school year, including 110 U.S. citizens, 127 Mexicans, and 17 of other nationalities.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year was 2,399 (ECE: 364; grades 1-5: 850; grades 6-8: 484; and grades 9-12: 701). Of the total, 618 were U.S. citizens, 1,277 were host-country nationals, and 504 were children of 34 other nationalities. Of the U.S. enrollment, 66 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 175 of U.S. business and foundation employees, 10 of religious organization employees, and 367 of other private U.S. citizens.

Facilities: The School occupies a 17-acre campus in Tacubaya, a suburb of Mexico City. There are complete modern facilities comprising 15 buildings including an Early Childhood Center; an elementary school building; a middle school; central offices; a high school building; a snack bar; a multipurpose building which includes the gymnasium, dressing and shower facilities; a covered pool; an auditorium; and 2 new indoor physical education facilities.

Finances: In the 1999-2000 school year, approximately 95 percent of the School's income derives from tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: ECE: $5,535; grades 1-5: $7,484; and grades 6-12: $8,232. All fees are payable in Mexican currency or the equivalent in U.S. dollars.
