Mr. Don Reeser, Director 2000-2001 The American International School of Mozambique (AISM) was formally opened in September 1990 as an independent, coeducational day school offering an American-style educational program from prekindergarten through grade 8 for students of all nationalities. Instruction is in English. The school year of 180 days is divided into 3 trimesters, beginning in August and ending in June. Organization: The School is governed by a 5-member Board of Directors, 4 of whom are elected by the AISM Association and one appointed by the U.S. Ambassador. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on parents or guardians of children enrolled at AISM. An active PTA supports the School and encourages parental involvement. AISM has a school-to-school partnership with Three Village School District of East Setauket, New York. The School is also a participating member of the Association of International Schools in Africa. Curriculum: AISM offers a high-quality education similar to that found in private schools in the United States. The curriculum is enriched by Portuguese, music, art, library, computers, and physical education. English fluency is required. AISM is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Faculty: There were 11 full-time and 11 part-time faculty members in the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year. Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year was 135. Of the total, 28 were U.S. citizens, 8 were host-country nationals, and 89 were children of 20 other nationalities. Facilities: AISM moved into a new 150-pupil campus during the 1996-97 school year. A 10,000 volume elementary library and audio/visual collection have been developed. Finances: Operating expenses are largely financed by tuition fees. The 1999-2000 tuition rates are as follows: PK: $6,000; Kdg.: $7,500; and grades 1-8: $8,700. Tuition fees are paid on a semester basis. There is a one-time fee of $2,000 and a testing fee of $150. A $1,000 seat deposit is payable by returning and new students. Tuition fees are payable in full for any portion of an academic quarter of attendance. For students wishing to be placed on a wait list for a grade with no openings, a $250 wait list fee can assure a priority placement for securing a seat (first-come, first-served), provided testing has occurred. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.) This Fact Sheet is intended to provide general information. The Office of Overseas Schools (A/OPR/OS) may have more detailed information. Prospective users of the schools may wish to inquire further with A/OPR/OS or contact the school directly for more specific and up-to-the-minute information regarding curriculum, special programs and the like. |
