2000-2001 The American School of Doha is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program for children of all nationalities from prekindergarten through grade 12. The School was founded in 1988. The school year comprises 4 quarters extending from September 4 to November 7, from November 12 to January 20, January 25 to April 12, and from April 16 to June 13. Organization: The School is governed by an appointed Board of Trustees and Board of Directors. The U.S. Ambassador serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees, and the membership includes a U.S. Embassy representative, a UNDP representative, and businessmen representing both U.S. and Qatari businesses. The director is responsible to the Board for the overall management of the School. The School is licensed by the Qatari Ministry of Education, Office of Private Schools. Curriculum: The School is divided into 4 sections, consisting of kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, and high school. The classes are small, with an average pupil/teacher ratio of 11:1, providing for individual attention to each child. A U.S. curriculum is offered which includes mathematics, science, language arts, computer applications, global social studies, English-as-a-Second-Language, Arabic, French, Spanish, physical education, music and instrument instruction, and art. Classroom instruction is in English. Children in grades 1 through 8 must choose either Arabic, French, or Spanish as a foreign language. The pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes meets from 7:55 until 12:00; students in grades 1-5 meet from 7:55 a.m. until 2:40 p.m.; and students in grades 6-12 meet from 7:55-2:45 p.m., The school week runs from Sunday through Thursday. The School is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Faculty: There are 42 full-time and 11 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 36 U.S. citizens and 17 third-country nationals. The instructional support staff consists of the director, a middle school/high school principal, an elementary principal, 2 guidance counselors, an administrative assistant, office managers, 2 secretaries, 2 accountants, a nurse, a librarian, an assistant librarian, 8 teacher aides, bus drivers/monitors, and custodial staff. Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 470 (PK-grade 5: 200; grades 6-8: 111; and grades 9-12: 159). Of the total, 212 were U.S. citizens, 81 were host-country nationals, and 177 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 29 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 107 of U.S. business and foundation employees, and 76 of other private U.S. citizens. Facilities: The School is housed in a one-story, purpose-built facility with 2 wings, one for the elementary school and one for the middle and high schools; elementary multipurpose room, 2 computer labs, 3 science labs, 2 music rooms, 2 art labs, library and drama room. There are also 5 port-a-cabins used for foreign language. There is a cafeteria serving catered meals. The campus has an indoor gymnasium; a swimming pool; volleyball, tennis and basketball courts; and a sports field. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 95 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK-grade 5: $6,802; grades 6-8: $9,490; and grades 9-12: $10,002. The School also charges a one-time registration fee of $1,000 and bus fees of $740 (one-way) to $912 (round trip). These fees are payable in Qatari riyals. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
