2000-2001 The Saudi Arabian International School-Riyadh is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from kindergarten I through grade 11. (grade 12 will be added in 2001-2002.) The School was founded in 1963. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 28 to December 13 and from January 6 to June 13. Organization: The School is governed by a 7-member Board, elected for 2-year terms. The right to vote at general membership meetings is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School. AIS-R is licensed by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Education. Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic public schools. Instruction is in English, though English-as-a-Second-Language is also taught. There is no religious instruction. The School does not have a comprehensive special education program and, therefore, cannot accept students who are physically, mentally, or emotionally challenged to the degree that they cannot be enrolled in a regular program of study. AIS-R is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Faculty: There are 138 full-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, 92 of whom are U.S. citizens. Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 1,463 (Kdg.I-grade 11), 629 of whom were U.S. citizens. Facilities: The School operates on one main campus, constructed in 1977 with major additions in 1980, 1999 and 2000. Facilities include more than 175 classrooms, a gymnasium/auditorium, large covered sports areas, 3 libraries with technology stations, a music building, and rooms for art and drama. There are 11 science laboratories (6 of which are computerized) and 12 fully-equipped computer laboratories. The School is fully air-conditioned. Finances: The School's income derives from regular day school tuition. In the 2000-2001 school year, the annual tuition rates are as follows: Kdg.I: $4,933; Kdg.II-grade 5: $7,867; grade 6-8: $8,133; grade 9: $8,933; and grades 10-11: $10,533. The School also charges a testing fee of $133 and a one-time registration fee of $1,467. These fees are payable in Saudi Riyals. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
