Dr. David Tully, Superintendent The American Elementary and High School in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a private, coeducational day school founded in 1920 which offers a full college-preparatory educational program from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 5 to December 17 and from January 27 to June 14. Organization: The School is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors elected for 2-year terms by the Sao Paulo Graded School Association, the sponsor of the School. The School is administered by a superintendent and arranged into 4 divisions, each one administered by a principal. The School is recognized, incorporated, and registered as tax-exempt in Brazil and in the United States. Curriculum: The curriculum is that of a U.S. preparatory school with strong academic emphasis. All students are enrolled in the American diploma program. The International Baccalaureate and Brazilian diplomas are also offered. The School is a test center for U.S. standardized tests including PSAT, SAT, and ACT. English is the language of instruction. Provision is made throughout the curriculum for students with exceptional abilities; specialists in learning disabilities and ESL assist students in coping with the demands of the classroom. All educational programs are supported by counseling services. Extracurricular activities add to the well-rounded curriculum. The School is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Faculty: There are 124 full-time and 3 part-time faculty members in the 1999-2000 school year, including 57 U.S. citizens, 61 Brazilians, and 9 persons of other nationalities. Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year was 1,130 (PS: 171; grades 1-5: 384; and grades 6-12: 575). Of the total, 402 were U.S. citizens, 473 were host-country nationals, and 255 were children of 36 other nationalities. Of the U.S. enrollment, 14 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire employees, 267 of U.S. business and foundation employees, 12 of religious organization employees, and 109 of other private U.S. citizens. Facilities: Located on a 16-acre campus, the School has excellent facilities that include 2 gymnasiums, a 500-seat auditorium, 2 libraries, a large cafeteria, 3 computer laboratories, a learning resource center, and ample physical education and recreational areas. Finances: In the 1999-2000 school year, about 82 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition. Annual tuition rates are: PS: $6,900; Kdg.-grade 5: $10,100; grades 6-8: $12,600; and grades 9-12: $14,600 payable in local currency. A one-time registration fee of $260 and an entrance fee of $4,200 for the first child, and $3,000 for each sibling are also charged. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
