2000-2001 The QSI International School of Sarajevo is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from preschool (3 and 4-year-old class) through grade 8 (13-year-old class) for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1997. The school year comprises 3 terms, extending from August 31 to December 13, from January 3 to March 23, and from April 2 to June 15. Organization: The School is governed by the Board of Directors of Quality Schools International, the membership of which is formed as set forth in the Bylaws of Quality Schools International. An Advisory Board, composed of 4 to 6 members who reside in Sarajevo, assists the School in its operation. The School operates with the approval of the government of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Curriculum: The School offers an outcomes-based educational program with a curriculum similar to that of U.S. public and private schools. Instruction, leading to individual mastery, takes advantage of small class sizes and the diverse educational backgrounds of the students. Instruction is in English. Bosnian and French are taught as foreign languages. Music, art, physical education, and computer are also part of the required curriculum. Faculty: There are 5 full-time and 4 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2001 school year, including 2 U.S. citizens, 3 host-country nationals and 4 third-country nationals. Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 65. Of the total, 6 were U.S. citizens, 6 host-country nationals, and 53 third-country nationals. No official Americans currently attend the school due to the "Spouse-Only Post" designation by the U.S. Department of State. Facilities: The School rents a large building 6 kilometers west of the main city center in Sarajevo. There are 6 classrooms, a library, an office suite, and a playground. Physical education classes are held in the gymnasium of a nearby Bosnian school and at other locations in Sarajevo. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, 99 percent of the School's income derives from regular day school tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Pre-K: $4,100; and grades K-8: $10,000. The School also charges an annual capital fund fee of $1,600 per student in grades K-8 only and a registration fee of $100. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars, Deutsche marks, and Bosnian KM. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.) This Fact Sheet is intended to provide general information. The Office of Overseas Schools (A/OPR/OS) may have more detailed information.
