2000-2001

The Shanghai American School (SAS) is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for English-speaking students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1912, although it was closed from 1950-1980. The academic year comprises 2 semesters extending from late August to mid-January and from mid-January to mid-June.

Organization: SAS is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors. Five members are elected from the SAS Parents' Association. One may be a non-parent and is appointed mid-year by the current Board. The American Consul General appoints the other member. Membership in the Association is open to all parents with children enrolled at SAS.

Curriculum: The curriculum reflects high quality U.S. standards in reading, science, language arts, computer studies and math. Drama, music, physical education, and Chinese language and culture are also offered. SAS received its first accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in the spring of 1988, was reaccredited in 1997, and is currently in the midst of a further reaccreditation cycle.

Faculty: In the 2000-2001 school year, there were 183 full-time faculty members, including 113 U.S. citizens, 17 host-country nationals, and 53 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 1,250 (PK-grade 12), including 368 U.S. citizens and 882 children of other nationalities. Of the U.S. enrollment, 13 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees.

Facilities: The School operates campuses on both the East and West sides of the city of Shanghai. The West campus covers a 28-acre site. It consists of 6 buildings: an auditorium, a gymnasium, music rooms, art rooms, 3 libraries, a central kitchen and dining room, as well as specialty and standard classrooms. The new campus that will house all SAS students on the West Side of the city opened in September 2000 and includes a high school, cafeteria, gymnasium, mechanical center and elementary, middle and high school buildings. Collectively the campus provides: 6 art rooms, 5 music rooms. 3 libraries, a central kitchen and dining room as well as over 100 specialty and standard classrooms. The East Campus is a partially completed school on a 24-acre site, with the first phase of what eventually will be the same elements as described above for the entire West Campus. Both campuses have extensive outside sports and play areas. All classrooms are networked for computers. All computers have Internet access. Both campuses were purpose built as international schools between 1998 and 2000.

Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, approximately 96 percent of the School's operational income was derived from regular day school tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $11,500; Kdg.-Grade 5: $12,500; Grades 6-8: $13,000; and Grades 9-12: $14,000. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
