2000-2001 The Surabaya International School is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from preschool (age 3 by first day of school) through grade 12. The School, founded in 1971, is established under Indonesian law with the status of a Yayasan (foundation). The school year comprises 4 quarters extending approximately from late August to mid-October, mid-October to mid-December, mid-January to mid-March and mid-March to early June. Organization: The School is governed by a 9-member Board, 7 of whom are elected by the members of the Surabaya International School Foundation. Two members are appointed by the Board and are Indonesian citizens. Membership in the Foundation is automatically conferred on all parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School. Curriculum: The School's basic curriculum and materials are U.S. with modifications so that all students may return to their own countries or join other international schools with a minimum of academic displacement. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredits the School. Faculty: At the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year, there were 29 staff members, including 19 U.S. citizens, 4 host-country nationals, and 6 third-world nationals. Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 237 (PS-grade 12). Of the total, 15 were U.S. citizens and 222 were third-world nationals. Facilities: The School has 50 air-conditioned classrooms, a library, a gymnasium, a playing field, and a swimming pool. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, approximately 95 percent of the School's operating income derives from regular day school tuition. As of August 2000, the school fees were as follows: Prep 1: $2,631; Prep 2: $4,770; Kdg.: $8,600; grades 1-5: $9,392; grades 6-8: $9,507; and grades 9-12: $9,760. A building fund certificate of $6,000 depreciating over 3 years is levied on all students as well as a one-time registration fee of $1,000 for all new students. When a child is withdrawn from the school, the building fund certificate is refunded at its current value. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
