Elementary School 2000-2001 The Thessaloniki International High School and Pinewood Elementary School are independent, coeducational schools which offer an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 and boarding facilities from grade 7 through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The Schools were founded in 1950 (elementary) and 1962 (secondary). The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from September 4 to January 19 and from January 22 to June 14. Organization: The Schools are governed by an 11-member School Board. Regular members of the Corporation, which includes all parents who have children enrolled in the Schools, as well as special members (the director and faculty), elect 8 of the 11 members to the Board for 2-year terms. The Schools are incorporated in the United States under the laws of the State of Delaware and have been designated as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college-preparatory public schools. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program was added in September 1999. The Schools' testing program includes the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying tests. Instruction is in English. Greek and French are taught as foreign languages. Eighty-five percent of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States and other countries. Faculty: There are 26 full-time and 10 part-time faculty members in the 2000-2201 school year, including 9 U.S. citizens, 12 host-country nationals, and 15 third-country nationals. Enrollment: Enrollment at the opening of the 2000-2001 school year was 256 (PK-grade 6: 117; and grades 7-12: 139). Of the total, 56 were U.S. citizens, 25 were host-country nationals, and 175 were of 32 other nationalities. Facilities: The Schools possess adequate and well-maintained facilities, including a chemistry/biology laboratory, a small gymnasium/auditorium, a library/audio-visual center, and a computer room. A new 4-classroom complex was constructed in the summer of 1998 to house areas for prekindergarten, kindergarten, music, and art. A two-classroom complex for grades 6 and 7 was constructed in the summer of 2000. Finances: In the 2000-2001 school year, about 90 percent of the Schools' income derives from regular day school tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $2,400; Kdg.: $3,536; grades 1-6: $4,799; and grades 7-12: $5,431. The School also charges a one-time capital levy of $1,010 and an activity/field trip fee of $86 for prekindergarten, $114 for kindergarten, and $172 for grades 1-12. Boarding costs for grades 7-12 are $5,052. These fees are payable in Greek drachmas or U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.) This Fact Sheet is intended to provide general information. The Office of Overseas Schools (A/OPR/OS) may have more detailed information. Prospective users of the schools may wish to inquire further with A/OPR/OS or contact the school directly for more specific and up-to-the-minute information regarding curriculum, special programs, and the like. |
