What is a Vacancy Announcement?
A vacancy announcement is a document utilized by federal agencies to recruit applicants. The Civil Service uses a vacancy announcement to fill specific vacant positions, whereas the Foreign Service recruits to increase its register of eligible candidates for a specific specialty, i.e., Facilities Maintenance Specialists, Information Management Specialists, etc. The vacancy announcement specifies who may apply, the period during which applications can be received, the targeted grades and salary levels, the basic qualifications--both educational and professional, and if any specialized experience is required. Potential applicants should read the information contained in the vacancy announcement carefully before submitting an application.
