As delivered
"Harry S Truman, 1884-1972"I grew up in Missouri. But one doesn't have to be a native of the "Show Me State" to appreciate the life, to embrace the legacy of Harry S Truman. President Truman rose from humble origins to the pinnacle of political power. The challenges that shaped his presidency were unprecedented in number and in scope. And yet through one crisis after another -- whether it involved using atomic weapons to end World War II; halting the spread of communism, extending freedom throughout the world, or fighting McCarthyism and segregation here at home -- President Truman displayed a clear vision, a keen understanding of the forces shaping the world, a sense of purpose and remarkable humility.
I know that Secretary Albright has been looking forward to this week's events: the Washington debut of this superb film and the naming of our Main State Building in President Truman's honor.
She too has helped our nation to effectively meet many critical challenges in the international arena.
After her nomination by President Clinton and her unanimous confirmation by the United States Senate, she was sworn in as the 64th Secretary of State on January 23, 1997.
Won't you please join me in welcoming her . . . .
