After 1994, about 50M FFr have been devoted to humanitarian demining in either bilateral or UN programs in Afghanistan, Angola, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, and Nicaragua. During 1996-1997, contributed about 68M FFr to EU-sponsored programs. Priority is placed in integrated incident prevention programs for children and nomadic peoples.

Romania

Participated in mine clearance operations in and donated equipment, a radiological laboratory and a mobile medical unit to, Angola.

Slovakia

Since 1993, has participated in mine clearance operations in the Former Yugoslavia (UNPROFOR and UNTAES), and has decided to send a demining unit to the Western Sahara. Also produces special demining equipment.

Slovenia

South Africa

Since 1996, via the South Africa Army Engineer Foundation, trained members of Angolan Demining Institute. In 1997, provided R12M for mine clearance in Mozambique.

Spain

Contributions to UN VTF in 1995 were 24,988,065 Ptas, and in 1997, 100,000,000 Ptas. Direct investments in Central American demining were 25,000,000 Ptas in 1996 and 75,000,000 Ptas in 1997. The Spanish brigade in the SFOR is involved in demining in Bosnia-Herzegovina and is executing "Walk in Freedom," a mine awareness program for children.

Sweden

Contributions to UN began in 1991 and have grown to about $40M, not including contributions to the ICRC for mine victim rehabilitation. The principal beneficiaries are Afghanistan, Angola, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, Central America, Laos, Mozambique, and Northern Iraq. An additional $20M has been spent by the Government, the armed forces, and industry on R&D projects. A national demining center has been established accessible to international organizations. In 1998, increase to $19-22M is anticipated, of which $2.6M will be invested in R&D.

Switzerland

From 1993-1997, contributed more than 25M Sfr. to demining and mine victim assistance. These funds went to UN demining programs (Afghanistan, Angola, and former Yugoslavia), and to the ICRC for Afghanistan, Angola, Cambodia, and Mozambique. Government also provided funds for mine awareness campaigns in Afghanistan and Mozambique; UN VTF; and to the Mine Action Center, Sarajevo. In early 1998, Government established the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining.

Turkey

Expressed pledge of $25,000 to SACEUR project to modify tanks for demining in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and offers to send a demining team to Egypt to assist in mine clearance..

United Kingdom

Since 1991, excluding victim assistance, has committed approx. £24M in bilateral activities in Afghanistan, Angola, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, Egypt, Northern Iraq, Laos, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, and Yemen. Plans to double annual expenditures to £10M for national capacity-building in affected countries, and contributes to ICRC appeals.

United States

March 16, 1998

Since 1993, the United States has spent more than $236 million on humanitarian demining. FY98 funding is over $82 million. In 14 countries, demining is underway, with seven new programs being established. Prototypes of selected equipment have been fielded in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cambodia, Honduras, Jordan, Laos, Mozambique, and Namibia. In 1997, War Victims Fund spent $7.5M for orthopedic assistance and reintegration programs to victims of landmines and UXO in Angola, Cambodia, Laos, Liberia, Mozambique, and Vietnam. Fund supports ICRC prosthetics training center in Tanzania. Supports Landmines Survivors Network program in Bosnia. Hosted Global Humanitarian Demining 2010 Initiative Conference in Washington, DC in May 1998.
