December 8 will mark the tenth anniversary of the INF Treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union, which eliminates intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles. The successful completion of the INF Treaty concluded a decade long effort to maintain the cohesion of the NATO alliance and to achieve the elimination of an entire class of weapons. Moreover, the INF Treaty served as a stepping stone for a long line of successful negotiations to limit strategic nuclear weapons and eliminate other weapons of mass destruction. It is instructive to recall the bipartisan cooperation leading to this agreement as well as to note its continued positive effect on international security issues. Those involved in the many years of negotiation and verification of the agreement can take great pride in having served the United States with distinction and making a continued contribution to world peace.
