Regional Environmental Hub for Brasilia, Brazil
State Department Regional Environmental Contact Officer:
- Established in 1999, the Regional Environmental Hub for South America has already developed an important niche covering regional/transborder environmental issues for the continent. Issues of primary concern are water and wetlands management, deforestation, air and water pollution, fire control, protection of endangered species and enforcement of environmental laws & regulations.
- Working closely with US Embassies and USAID Missions on the continent as well as with national and state governments, international organizations and NGOs, the Hub is currently developing the Global Transboundary River Initiative in the Pantanal, coordinating an exchange of Brazilian expertise on alternative tropical agriculture with Colombia and other Andean countries, and supporting regional cooperation to combat forest fires and trafficking in endangered species.
- The Hub is also supporting multilateral efforts to establish regional environmental corridors and to develop regional cooperation for the Brazilian Amazonian Surveillance System for environmental monitoring due for commissioning in 2002.
