Subject: Additional requirements for requests for permission
to conduct marine scientific research in Portugal's jurisdiction.

Environmental and Scientific Affairs, August 29, 1990.
OES/OA has been advised by our Embassy in Lisbon, that the following information must be provided for requests for U.S. marine scientific research in areas subject to the jurisdiction of Portugal:
1) As precise dates as possible of each proposed entry and exit of Portugal's exclusive economic zone (20O nm).
2) Dates of all port calls.
3) Type and registration number of vessel.
4) Description of scientific instruments to be used during vessel's research.
This information is required in addition to that required NTRVO No. 67.
The stated lead-time requirement is six months. Therefore, it is requested that clearance requests be submitted to the Department of State at least seven months prior to the start of research, and in compliance with the "UNOLS Handbook for International Operations of U.S. Scientific Research Vessels," Appendix D (Foreign Clearance Request Forms).
