The Summit of the Eight will be held in Kyushu-Okinawa, Japan, from July 21 to July 23, 2000. Leaders of seven major industrialized countries -- Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States -- plus Russia and the President of the European Commission will attend the meetings.
In his opening statement at the Foreign Press Center,
Alan Larson, Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs stated that information technology revolution,
development, and poverty alleviation are major themes of the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit 2000. The G-8 Group will also focuses on issues that include debt relief, health, education, environment, international crime, and
trade.
In a briefing on President Clinton's trip to the G-8 Summit, Deputy National Economic Advisor, Lael Brainard, reiterated that "... The information technology revolution that has helped drive economic growth in the United States " and the growing prosperity "disparity with the poorest nations" will be the major themes of this summit. |
