Mandate
UNOMIG monitors implementation of the May 1994 cease-fire agreement and observes operations of the CIS peacekeeping force (invited by the Georgian government and Abkhaz separatists to implement the cease-fire).
U.S. Interests
It is in U.S. interests to support Georgian sovereignty and territorial integrity; maintain international involvement in resolving conflicts in the former Soviet Union; and monitor CIS/Russian peacekeeping operation. UNOMIG encourages national reconciliation and stability by working to end a conflict that has created thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
