South Sudan Online: Links

Maps, Data and Weather

Introduction

This page links to maps and information produced by the humanitarian relief community that are useful in complex humanitarian emergencies and natural and technological disasters.

South Sudan Online is strictly an experimental initiative and does not represent official UN or U.S. Government information. It is being developed by the US Department of State as a benefit to the UN ReliefWeb Project, GDIN and other projects working on humanitarian, natural or technological disaster relief, and for the consideration of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Please send corrections or suggestions to IO/PPC, US Department of State

Index of Map Sites

  1. Airstrip and Village Maps: Often the most difficult to obtain, these hand drawn maps by relief workers are very valuable. Usually the only available detailed maps of these locations, they provide information on airstrip locations, water resources, village hazards and more. If you have additional information or maps, please share them. What you know may help the next humanitarian relief organization going into the same area.
  2. University of Texas Collection. The University of Texas has posted on its web site city maps of Wau, Malakal, Juba, and Khartoum, in addition to the full-scale country map. This has been done in cooperation with Sudan Online. They also intend to prepare a bibliography of maps of Sudan for the use of relief workers. See the following images on their site. (Note: Many of the images at this site are extremely large and require a significant amount of RAM.)

  1. ReliefWeb: Maps and Data; often the best on the Internet
  2. ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency): Several maps from 1996 and information on relief sites from 1997 and 1999.
  3. AICF: Maps of Labone region (August 1996). Also see map of Gulu, Uganda, a support facility for these operations.
  4. Library of Congress Bibliography of Sudan Maps: A through D Maps; E through I Maps; J through R Maps; S maps; T though Z Maps. This bibliography was as a reference aid to relief workers. Its existence is a reminder that excellent, development- and relief-relevant maps often reside in major national collections. Every map in the bibliography is available at the Library of Congress.
  5. Satellite Images of South Sudan: These are not easy to come by and many are more useful to staffs researching agricultural and water patterns. Having said that, humanitarian relief agencies operating in Sudan may wish to contact the EROS user support office at 605-594-6116 or the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center DAAC at 301-614-5341.
