John E. Lange is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam. Prior to this assignment, he was the Deputy Director of the Office of East African Affairs in the Department of State. He transferred to the Bureau of African Affairs after spending a year studying at the National War College. He received a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy and was honored as a Distinguished Graduate in the Class of 1996.

Mr. Lange joined the U.S. diplomatic service in 1981. His assignments have included counselor for Refugee and Migration Affairs at the USUN Geneva, 1991-95; U.S. Embassy in Lome, Togo, 1989-91; special assistant to the Under Secretary for Management, 1988-89; Office of Management Operations, 1987-88; budget and fiscal officer in Paris and consular officer in Mexico City.

Mr. Lange received a B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1971 and a J.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1975. He was admitted to the Bar in the State of Wisconsin in 1975 and in the State of New York in 1979. He is the author of numerous papers and articles. Mr. Lange was born in 1948 and is married to Alejandra M. Lange. They have one daughter.
