Political Conflict in Cambodia, 1997-98

The government that emerged in Cambodia after 1993 elections was an uneasy coalition of two parties and split in July 1997. Elections were held July 26, 1998. The U.S. welcomed the 1998 establishment of a coalition government in Cambodia by the Cambodian People's Party and FUNCINPEC, as well as Cambodia’s return to the United Nations and its movement toward membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
