U.S. Food Aid to North Korea, 1997-98

The United States decided in September 1998 that it would further respond to the January 1998 World Food Program appeal for food assistance to the DPRK by contributing an additional 300,000 metric tons of wheat. In February 1998, the U.S. announced a contribution of 200,000 metric tons to the 603,000 metric-ton World Food Program appeal for North Korea. Chronic food production shortfalls have resulted in widespread malnutrition in the DPRK, and 1998's harvest was again expected to fall far short of production targets.
