Leadership, Advocacy, and Communications Training Seminar for NEI Women Activists
Fact sheet released by the Bureau of European Affairs, U.S. Department of State, Washington, DC, May 22, 2000![]()
As a follow-up to the Reykjavik Conference on Women and Democracy last October, which the U.S., Iceland, and the Nordic Council of Ministers co-sponsored, the U.S. is hosted a Leadership, Advocacy, and Communications Training Seminar May 22-26 for women from Russia and the Baltic States. The training seminar, organized jointly by the President's Interagency Council on Women, the Department's Bureau of European Affairs, and the media relations firm, Podesta.com, is an example of the kind of public-private partnership envisioned during the Reykjavik Conference and encouraged by NEI. The 12 Seminar participants, selected by U.S. posts in the four countries, are women who are leading their country's progress toward democracy in the areas of public life, communications, and NGO advocacvy. The seminar consisted of training in such areas as leadership skills, crafting and communicating a public message to and through the media, coalition-building, using new technology, and issues advocacy -- all needs identified by participants at the Reykjavik Conference. The training seminar also offered meetings with high-level policymakers, NGO advocates, and business leaders.[end of document]
