Remarks | Press Statements | Fact Sheets | Reports | Material From 1995-1999 | Related SitesNote on country name: The United States announced on May 21, 1992, that it would not recognize the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, comprising the Republics of Serbia and Montenegro, as the successor to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. On November 17, 2000, in response to the changes in Yugoslavia following the democratic election of President Vojislav Kostunica and the ouster of Slobodan Milosevic, the United States established formal diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY).
