| Relief and Reconstruction in Central America: Importance to the U.S. Nearly one person out of four people in Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador were directly affected by Hurricane Mitch, and the effects of this tragedy have reverberated in the United States as well. What compounds this natural disaster is that it came at a time when Central America was making political and economic progress. Promoting peace, building democratic institutions, achieving proposperity, and raising the quality of life are key U.S. foreign policy goals in Central America. We need to make sure that this tragedy does not reverse the regionās progress. The U.S. Government is supporting a massive relief effort and rehabilitation operation, and everyone can help our neighbors in need.
