Third Summit of the Americas: Advancing Our Common Agenda The third Summit of the Americas will take place in Quebec City, Canada on April 20-22, 2001. This event is of high importance to the United States as it will likely be the first gathering at which the new U.S. President will have the opportunity to meet with other hemispheric leaders. It will also provide a unique opportunity to highlight the region's importance in U.S. foreign policy.

What is the Summit of the Americas?   The Summit of the Americas is the common agenda of the democratically elected leaders of the hemisphere and reflects their shared values and shared responsibilities. It provides a unique mechanism for the heads of state and heads of governments to discuss solutions to common political, economic, and social problems in a multilateral and comprehensive way. The Summit brings together freely elected leaders united in their commitment to democracy, human rights, and free markets.

Within the Department of State, the Office of Economic Policy and Summit Cordination (EPSC), in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, is responsible for coordinating U.S. policy on the Summit of the Americas.
