The 27th U.S.-Vietnam Human Rights Dialogue was held November 1-2 in Washington DC. Senior Official for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Erin Barclay and H.E. Mr. PHAM Hai Anh, Head of delegation, Director-General, Department of International Organizations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs led their respective delegations in the dialogue.
The dialogue addressed a wide range of human and labor rights-related issues, including respect for freedoms of expression and association; freedom of religion or belief; rule of law and legal reform; security sector governance; and the rights of members of marginalized populations, including members of ethnic minority groups, LGBTQI+ persons, and persons with disabilities, as well as individual cases of concern.
The Vietnamese delegation also had similar discussions with members of Congress and members of American civil society.
Under the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the promotion of human rights is an essential element of U.S. foreign policy and key to our expanded engagement with Vietnam. We are committed to continuing candid and results-based discussions with the Vietnamese government on this issue.
