The Department of State strives to protect the privacy of all individuals by collecting the minimum amount of personally identifiable information (PII) from the public and its employees. When that collection is necessary, the Privacy Office ensures that the Department complies with all Federal privacy statutes and guidance. With expertise in privacy laws, we inform privacy policy development both within the Department and in collaboration with the rest of the federal government. We promote awareness of privacy principles among Department employees and seek to build public trust by implementing best practices through coordination with the broader privacy community.

As part of its statutory duties, the Privacy Office publishes its current Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) and Systems of Records Notices (SORNs).
