CANDIDATE: Michael Jonathan Adler

Michael Adler is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, with over three decades of experience. He is currently senior advisor in the Bureau of African Affairs at the Department of State. Most recently he served as the Deputy Senior Director for South Asia, and before that, the Director for Afghanistan, on the National Security Council Staff. Before joining the NSC staff Mr. Adler served as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs at the State Department. He also held assignments in the State Department as Director of the Office of Afghanistan Affairs, Director of the Officer of Near Eastern Affairs in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and as a senior advisor in the Bureau of Political Military Affairs.

Overseas he has served as Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassies in Lebanon and Kuwait and as Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy, Kabul, Afghanistan. His demonstrated ability to lead effectively in complex security environments coupled with his considerable experience in shaping policy to advance our interests in challenging and fluid environments, makes him a well-qualified candidate to serve as Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Adler held assignments in the Office of Regional Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, as the Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, and as a Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. He also served in Paris and Qatar and in the State Department Operations Center. Prior to joining the State Department, he worked at the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Mr. Adler earned a B.A degree from Pomona College and an M.A from Stanford University. He is the recipient of multiple performance awards from the Department of State, the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Spanish Order of Civil Merit.
