The American International School of Abuja (AISA) is a private, nonprofit, coeducational, college preparatory day school offering programs from preschool (age 3) through grade 12. Located in Nigeria’s capital, AISA was founded in 1993, serving a diverse, multi-cultural community. The school year comprises of 2 semesters beginning in August and ending in June. AISA has 182 instructional days. AISA’s mission is to “Challenge, Collaborate, Empower: Inspiring Global Citizens to be Lifelong Learners.”
Organization: A 7-member Board of Governors governs the school. The board consists of 4 Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador’s appointed representative, and 3 other members elected by the school association. The head of school holds an ex-officio, non-voting position. AISA has 3 school trustees: 2 elected and 1 appointed by the U.S. Ambassador.
Curriculum: AISA is fully accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and offers a standards-based curriculum that incorporates the acquisition of concepts and the development of skills. The AERO Common Core standards guide the curriculum development and allows for smooth transitions to other international schools or those in the United States. As a U.S. college-preparatory program, the school offers a variety of course options including Advanced Placement (AP) classes with the goal of preparing students for admission into the best universities globally. AISA is one of only 4 schools in Africa to offer the AP Capstone Program. The school offers a variety of electives including art, music, theater, PE, IT, French, Spanish, and STEM. English-As-An-Additional-Language (EAL) and limited learning support services are available. AISA offers its students several extra-curricular activities, including MUN, MathCounts, robotics, student council, and community service options. Students in athletics (basketball, soccer, swimming, volleyball) have the opportunity to compete in the West African International Schools Activities League.
Faculty: In the 2019-2020 school year, AISA has 49 full-time teachers.
Enrollment: The current enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year is 470 students (PK3 – grade 12) from more than 40 nationalities.
Facilities: The school includes 44 classrooms, an EAL and LS center, 2 science labs, a computer lab, a library media center, 2 music rooms, 2 art rooms, a multipurpose hall, 15 administrative offices, a conference room, a clinic, and a school store. The school also has a swimming pool, soccer field, 2 basketball courts, tennis court, running track, and 2 playgrounds.
Finances: The majority of the school’s income is derived from tuition fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PS: $7,688; PK: $8,714; K: $14,350; grades 1-5: $17,494; grades 6-8: $18,796; grades 9-12: $20,970. Upon initial enrollment, for kindergarten to grade 12, there is a one-time capital development fee of $10,000. For PS and PK, a one-time capital development fee is paid when the child is admitted to kindergarten. An annual development levy of $500 is charged for each student. An application fee of $500 is required for all new applicants. A fee of $1,500 is charged for all students enrolled in the EAL and learning support program. (All fees are in USD.)
