The American School of Bombay, founded in 1981, is an independent, coeducational day school in Mumbai, India. The school offers a U.S.-style educational program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The school year extends from mid-August to early June. The school’s structure, curriculum methods, and pedagogy integrate an American approach to education with the International Baccalaureate Program.
Organization: A board of trustees elected by the parents and faculty governs the school. The American Consul General is the chairman of the Board of Trustees and appoints two other members.
Curriculum: The school offers a college-preparatory curriculum, conferring its graduates with an American high school diploma and/or the International Baccalaureate diploma. IB courses of study in pre-kindergarten–grade 5 and grades 9-12 include Primary Years Program in the elementary school, pre-IB Program in grades 9-10, and the Diploma Program in grades 11-12. The middle school, comprising grades 6-8, offers students a full program to prepare them for high school. The rigorous program is about developing critical thinking skills while acquiring academically relevant content knowledge. The school recognizes all students’ unique abilities and aims to develop their individual skills to become compassionate citizens who understand that their choices can make an impact on the world.
Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, the American School of Bombay has 198 total staff including 110 teachers, 55 of whom are U.S. citizens, 29 host-country nationals, and 26 third-country nationals.
Enrollment: The current enrollment is 604 (Pre-K through grade 12), including 169 U.S. citizens; 165 host-country nationals; and 270 third-country nationals.
Facilities: In 1981, a group of international parents started the American School of Bombay with just 12 students in a room at the American Consulate. In August 2012, ASB evolved from a single campus school to a dual campus school, located in the central suburbs of the city, the two campuses offer 200,000 square feet of custom-designed instructional spaces for delivering unique and individualized programs to the students. The 100,000 square feet elementary campus is designed around adaptable online-blended learning spaces with movable walls and purpose-built modular furniture, as well as common learning and multipurpose spaces allow teachers to reconfigure the learning environment to personalize the learning experience for the students. There is one iCommons on each of the classroom floors of the school, bringing resources closer to students. Each classroom floor has its own food service area allowing grade-level teaching teams to schedule eating and recess times best suited to their students’ learning. Teachers instruct students in well-resourced music, art, and science studios. The elementary wellness program is delivered in physical education spaces, including a roof-top pool. Housing the middle and high schools, the secondary campus has 100,000 square feet of air-conditioned facilities which include classrooms with configurable partitions and expandable spaces, online-blended learning center, two-level iCommons, sensory hub, multiple science labs, choir rooms and band facilities, drama room, black-box theatre, art studios, fitness center, heated swimming pool, open-air atrium, and sports grounds developed for basketball, tennis, soccer, and track and field. The school has invested heavily in effective clean air systems (HEPA Filter system) for all indoor spaces on both the campuses.
Finances: In the 2022-2023 school year, the school’s income is derived from tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Pre-K: $20,000; KG-Grade 5: $32,450; Grades 6-10: $34,130; and Grades 11-12: $35,020. The school also charges a one-time registration fee of $2,500 and a one-time enrollment fee of $27,500 for grades K-12 (for Pre-K 4, $13,750 and a balance of $13,750 with enrollment in Kindergarten); These tuition and fees are quoted in U.S. dollars. The school bus fee is ₹135,000 Indian Rupees per child.
