The American School of Madrid (ASM), is a leading private, non-profit school serving students of all nationalities. The K-12 program is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Spanish Ministry of Education. Its 11-acre campus is located just 12 kilometers west of Madrid City.  ASM was the first American school in Spain to offer a full IB Diploma Program. It is an early adopter of the Middle States Sustaining Excellence protocol which features action research as a school focusing on innovation and creating students who are innovators. The school has taken a leadership role in zero-energy educational buildings and in 2023 its OPAL-certified play environment will be a first in Spain. ASM graduates gain access to leading overseas universities. ASM is also a co-founder of AISiS, a collaborative partnership for American and international schools in Spain.

Organization: The school is governed by a board of trustees. Board membership is self-perpetuating. The U.S. Ambassador has traditionally accepted the honorary presidency of the board. Legally recognized as a Spanish association, the school operates under statutes approved by the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Curriculum: The curriculum is similar to that of U.S. private, college-preparatory schools. Instruction is in English. The school’s testing program includes the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) and College Board tests. Spanish, French, and Mandarin are taught as foreign languages. The majority of graduates attend colleges and universities in the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. ASM has a Learning Support program and caters to Lower and Middle School students who are learning English. Psychological testing, as well as private remedial assistance, is available in the community. There is an after-school program for sports and extracurricular activities. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the International Baccalaureate Organization, and the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, ASM has 201 total staff including 113 teachers, 66 of whom are U.S. citizens, 26 host-country nationals, and 21 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: In September of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment is 1,031. Of the total, 368 are U.S. citizens, 279 are host-country nationals, and 384 are third-country nationals.

Facilities: The ASM campus is located 12 kilometers west of the center of Madrid, in Pozuelo de Alarcón near Aravaca. The facilities were inaugurated in 1967 and currently include five main buildings; a lower school building which includes classrooms as well as a lower school learning commons-library, a lower school science lab, a full gymnasium, and a playground; a new zero-energy middle school and administration building (opened April 2021); an upper school with learning commons and cafeteria renovated in 2016; and a center for the arts that houses three art classrooms, three music classrooms, a drama classroom, a 600-seat auditorium, and a large multipurpose room. The science center and athletics complex include science labs, a full-sized gymnasium, a fitness and weights room, and a health and yoga room. Outdoor PE facilities include two tennis courts, an all-purpose weather track, a turf soccer field, a baseball diamond, and a multipurpose covered outdoor area. At ASM, each student is given a tablet (K3-grade 1) or a laptop (grades 2-8). There are two digital labs, one dedicated to digital arts and one to robotics. Technology is integrated into all grades and curriculums, and specific technology courses are offered.

Finances: In the 2022-2023 school year, approximately 98% of the school’s income derives from tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $14,899,05; K3: $15,189,91; grades 1-2: $20,586,42; grades 3-5: $23,124,70; grades 6-8: $27,543,26; and grades 9-12: $28,140,20. The school also charges a one-time capital fee of $7,895,28, an optional bus fee of $2,322,94 and a daily lunch fee of $8,39 per day. All fees are payable in euros or U.S. dollars.
