The Anglo-American School of Sofia (AAS) is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school was founded in 1967. The school year begins in the third full week of August and ends in the third week of June. The 2019-2020 student school year is from August 21 to June 18 (the 2020-2021 school year starts August 26). New student/family orientation is Monday, August 24, 2020 for the 2020-2021 school year.

Organization: The school is governed by a 9-member board. Four board members are appointed by the U.S. Ambassador (upon recommendation by the board), and another 4 members are appointed by the British Ambassador (upon recommendation by the board). The ninth member is the elected president of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

Curriculum: The curriculum is a compilation of North American and European standards, as well as best practices from international schools.  Instruction is in English. English-Language-Learning (ELL) is also offered, as are learning resource, French, Spanish, Bulgarian, physical education, art, music, theatre, technology, and library. In both the middle and high schools there are also additional courses in robotics, global issues, service leadership, sustainability, maker time, musical theater, and graphic design. Students in the elementary school have ready access to iPads and laptops. The middle and high schools are BYOD (bring your own device), in which all students are responsible for procuring and bringing their own devices (i.e. laptops). The school offers an extensive extracurricular program and is a member of the Central and Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA) through which students participate in regional athletic and activity events. After-school opportunities for elementary school students happen daily and benefit from a high participation rate, similar to the middle and high schools. AAS is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the Council of International Schools (CIS); is an authorized International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) world school; and is a member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS).

Faculty: In the 2019-2020 school year, there are 88 full-time faculty members. In addition to the teaching staff we have 22 teaching assistants (each elementary classroom has a teaching assistant).

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, AAS has 581 students, prekindergarten to grade 12.

Facilities: The state-of-the-art campus of 8 hectares (19.7 acres) is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, in the Pancharevo region of Sofia. AAS is an award winning facility (Building of the Year 2006; LEED Gold EBOM Award 2012 Leading in Energy and Environmental Design, and LEED Gold New Building 2013). The school building has a unique layout, which successfully combines design and functionality with energy efficiency. The school has 3 large wings (the Balkan Wing, the Vitosha Wing, and the Rila Renaissance Center). AAS facilities include a green roof, many open multipurpose areas for flexible learning environments, solar panels for heating water, photo-voltaic cells to collect energy, and a self-supporting water system that allows us to reuse grey-water for toilets and irrigate green spaces with biologically cleaned grey-water. The school offers many indoor and outdoor sports facilities (including 2 outdoor sports fields, outdoor basketball courts, 2 tennis courts, 2 large gymnasiums), a theater, art studios, music rooms, a dance studio, science labs, a fitness room, and a student-designed playground that includes a zip-line and a toboggan hill. The school has a garden, pond, and chickens. The library has 21,000 volumes, as well as a variety of online media. The science labs are well equipped, and there is ample community space.

Finances: The school’s income is derived almost exclusively from tuition. Annual tuition rates for 2019-2020 are as follows: preschool: €8,900; K-grade 5: €16,065; grades 6-8: €17,280; and grades 9-12: €18,455. The annual capital fee is €3,110. New students are charged a one-time registration fee of €950 payable on first enrollment and a one-time entrance capital fee of €1,560. For those who come to school by bus, the annual fee is €1,670. Fees related to endeavors such as traveling with a sports team or traveling for an arts celebration range from activity to activity with respect to the location of the event and are in addition to the above.
