I extend my congratulations, on behalf of the people and Government of the United States, to all Angolans as you commemorate 44 years of independence.

This year, the United States and Angola marked 26 years of diplomatic relations with a series of high-level engagements, including my meeting with Foreign Minister Augusto and the Deputy Secretary’s visit to Luanda, during which we renewed our Strategic Dialogue.  The United States welcomes Angola’s efforts to fight corruption and improve its human rights record, as evidenced by our second Human Rights Dialogue and Angola’s ratification of several human rights treaties.  We commend Angola for its efforts to diversify its economy, creating opportunities for even greater U.S. private sector engagement.  We strongly support Angola’s growing role as a leader in promoting regional stability and look forward to deepening political and commercial cooperation in the years to come.

I extend my best wishes to the Angolan people for a peaceful and prosperous 44th year of freedom.
