The Asmara International Community School is a nonprofit, independent, co-educational day school and offers an educational program from preschool through grade 12. The school was founded in 1994 by the U.S. Embassy and the United Nations to serve the needs of the international community and other students seeking a rigorous education in English and is accredited by the Middle States Association. The school is also an IB World School and as such is authorized to offer the IB Diploma in grades 11 & 12.  The school year begins in August and ends in June.

Organization: AICS is governed by a 7-member Board of Governors. The AICS Parents’ Association elects five of the members. Membership in the association is automatically conferred to the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. Two board members are appointed, one by the US Ambassador in Eritrea and the other by the Head of the UNDP.

Curriculum: The school is divided into elementary (from prekindergarten to grade 6) and secondary (grade 7 to grade 12) sections. From kindergarten to grade 6, students study the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) in self-contained classrooms. In grades 7 and 8, students follow the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC). In grades 9 through 10, students undertake the core subjects of English, math, science, social studies, and French. All students from the early childhood classroom to grade 10 take music, art, PE, and IT. English-as-a-Second Language support is provided for students who need additional support. For grades 11 and 12, students study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, after AICS received authorization to offer this program in 2019.

Faculty: In the 2019-2020 school year, there are 21 full-time teachers (with several instructional assistants). The teaching faculty is certified in their home countries.
