Founded in 1986, the school offers a differentiated, American curriculum, fully accredited with strong academic programs, including learning support and foreign languages. BFIS offers 3 diploma programs: American High School Diploma, Spanish High School Bachillerato Certificate, and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. BFIS is a truly international school with a student body representing more than 50 different nationalities and cultural heritages. BFIS also has a highly engaged school community and strong Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

Organization: The school is governed by a 10-member board (all BFIS parents). BFIS is legally recognized as a Spanish Association and is owned by the Benjamin Franklin Foundation, which is legally incorporated in Delaware, U.S.A. BFIS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, authorized by both the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Catalan government, and authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. The school is a member of the following educational organizations: NAIS, MSA, CASE, IBO, AAIE, NASSP, Barcelona Global and BISA (Barcelona International School Association).

Curriculum: The school’s educational program includes elements of both the U.S. and Spanish educational systems and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) in the last 2 years of high school. The academic program is similar to a U.S. college-preparatory, private, nonprofit school, with a focus on challenging and supporting each individual student. The BFIS curriculum is aligned with Common Core Standards, which reflect American benchmarks for achievement. The BFIS curriculum establishes developmentally appropriate learning objectives at every grade level. Small group and individualized language instruction is offered in both Spanish and English for non-native speakers. BFIS has learning specialists on staff for students with special needs. Tutorial assistance is available within the community for children in need of additional support. High school students are supported by 2 counselors for academic and social emotional issues and 1 college counselor in the process of making decisions about students’ post-secondary futures. Most graduates, upon completing the BFIS program, attend some of the most prestigious universities in the United States, Spain, UK, and other countries all over the world.
