Alan Purcell serves as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL).  He oversees the bureau’s work on issues involving Europe and South and Central Asia. Alan was previously Director of DRL’s Office of European Affairs. Prior to joining the DRL bureau, he served in the following positions in the Foreign Service: Political Counselor in Kyiv, Ukraine (2014-17); Deputy Director of the Office of Caucasus Affairs and Regional Conflicts (2011-13); Eastern Mediterranean Regional Counterterrorism Coordinator, based in Athens, Greece (2008-11); Political Officer in Tbilisi, Georgia (2006-08); Belarus desk officer (2004-06); Political Officer in Chisinau, Moldova (2002-04); and Consular Officer in Budapest, Hungary (1999-2001).
