
David A. Schlaefer's term ended on August 4, 2021.
David Allen Schlaefer was the Deputy Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Acting Deputy Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. Prior to that, he was the Director of the Global Coalition’s Executive Secretariat. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Mr. Schlaefer has served in Romania, Japan, Iraq, Finland, Mexico, Brazil, and has had several assignments at the State Department in Washington, D.C. From 2012-2015, he was the Director for Political-Military Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and was a member of the U.S. negotiating team for the 2015 revision of the U.S.-Japan Defense Guidelines. Mr. Schlaefer has received the State Department’s Superior Honor Award five times as well as a Commander’s Award for Civilian Service from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team for service in Iraq and a Meritorious Service Award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
