Dr. Sharon Brown-Hruska serves as the Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of State. She oversees the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), which provides evidence-based policy analysis and advice to the Secretary and senior leaders across the State Department on critical issues relevant to ensuring our economic and national security. Drawing on OCE’s professional expertise and Assistant Secretary of State-equivalent rank, the Chief Economist advises the Secretary of State through the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, working in partnership with other bureaus, offices, and U.S. government agencies.
Prior to this role, Dr. Brown-Hruska was Managing Director and Partner in the Global Securities and Finance Practice at National Economic Research Associates (NERA) in its Washington, DC office. She also served as a Professor in Tulane University’s Energy Institute and as a Visiting Professor of Finance in the A.B. Freeman School of Business.
Prior to joining NERA, Dr. Brown-Hruska served as Commissioner (2002–2006) and Acting Chairman (2004–2005) of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). While leading the CFTC, she served as a member of the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets, the President’s Corporate Fraud Task Force, the Financial Literacy and Education Commission, and more recently as a member of the CFTC’s Energy and Environmental Markets Advisory Committee.
Dr. Brown-Hruska served as a Public Director at MarketAxess Holdings, a member of the Board and Chair of the Regulatory Oversight Committee of the Electronic Liquidity Exchange (ELX), a Trustee of the International Securities Exchange (ISE), and various other advisory boards and committees. She has testified before Congressional committees and addressed numerous governmental, financial organizations and associations, including the International Monetary Fund, Chamber of Commerce, Bipartisan Policy Committee, Managed Funds Association, and various other groups.
Dr. Brown-Hruska has authored and edited publications on business and international markets, including in Barron’s, Capital Markets Law Journal, Encyclopedia of Business Ethics and Society, Financial Times, Forbes, International Commodities Review, Journal of Futures Markets, Regulation, Wall Street Journal, and numerous journals and books.
Dr. Brown-Hruska received a PhD and a MA in Economics, and a BA in International Studies and Economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
