
Julia Sweeney's term ended on May 31, 2021.
Julia Sweeney has been a special agent with the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) since 1999. She currently serves as the Acting Assistant Director of DSS’ Domestic Operations Directorate where she provides oversight of a variety of DSS programs within the United States, including field offices, criminal investigations, counterintelligence, and protective operations.
Ms. Sweeney most recently served as the Deputy Assistant Director for the Office of Domestic Facilities Protection (DFP). In this office, she managed protective security support programs that include the nationwide Uniformed Protection Division; physical security for U.S.-based State Department facilities; facility access control functions that include special events or special access; and the Domestic Security Officer program. Prior to her assignment in DFP, Ms. Sweeney was the Deputy Assistant Director for Field Office Management, which provides administrative, operational, budgetary, infrastructure, and policy guidance support for eight domestic field and 21 resident DSS offices.
Like many agents, Ms. Sweeney has split her career between domestic and overseas assignments. On the domestic front, she has served two tours in the New York Field Office, worked for DSS’ International Programs Directorate on the European Desk, and later served as Investigations Branch Chief in DSS’ Office of Counterintelligence.
Overseas, Ms. Sweeney has completed assignments as an Assistant Regional Security Officer in Warsaw, Poland, and as an Assistant Regional Security Office – Investigator in Moscow. She served as a Regional Security Officer (RSO) at the U.S. Consulates General in St. Petersburg, Russia and Guangzhou, China.
Ms. Sweeney has a Bachelor of Arts from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. She is the recipient of Department of State Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards and was recognized by the U.S. Marine Corps as the 2015 Region 3 RSO of the Year.
