Roopa Rangaswamy has served as Deputy Executive Secretary since September 2018. From 2014-2018, she covered Middle East and Africa related issues on the Secretary’s Policy Planning Staff. Previously, she served in the Near East Bureau in a variety of capacities including as Director of the Office of the Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, Chief of Staff to the Special Coordinator for Egypt, and senior advisor on Iran. Other assignments include special assistant to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs for Middle East and counterterrorism issues, director of the office responsible for terrorism designations and multilateral issues in the Counterterrorism Bureau, and Middle East nonproliferation officer in the International Security and Nonproliferation Bureau.
