Previously, he served at the U.S. Agency for Global Media’s (USAGM) Chief Strategy Officer. Powers has a Ph.D. from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California (USC), and from 2016-2018, he served as the Executive Director of the United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy at the State Department. Previously, Powers was a tenured professor at Georgia State University, where he established and led its Center for Global Information Studies, and is currently an adjunct professor-practitioner at Syracuse University.
