Our Mission

The Office of Strategic Stability and Deterrence Affairs (SSD) leads in the development, diplomatic negotiation, Congressional coordination, implementation, verification, and compliance analysis of both current and prospective nuclear arms control measures and agreements. SSD also engages with allies and partners to provide them with confidence and reassurance in U.S. deterrence commitments, while seeking to reduce risk and improve stability with Russia and the People’s Republic of China.
