The United States congratulates the Government of Botswana and its citizens on another peaceful presidential election, which further strengthens Botswana’s democracy. Since Botswana’s independence in 1966, the United States has supported the development of the country’s democratic processes and institutions. We will continue to support the people of Botswana as they ensure for themselves a prosperous, secure, and democratic future.

We congratulate President Masisi on his re-election. The United States looks forward to working with President Masisi and his government to achieve and sustain HIV epidemic control, to promote trade and commercial ties between our two nations, to enhance regional security and Botswana’s capability to combat transnational organized crime and violent extremism, and to protect the country’s wildlife resources and fragile ecosystems.
